A new field watercolor journal

Adding color to sketches

I've been wanting to explore adding color to some sketches. I typically sketch in either pencil or pen and ink. While I've never really been a watercolor artist, the times I have used it have given the work an added dimension. My idea is to simply add a bit of color to basic shapes, not to deviate from my approach but more to add a splash of color.
The first two sketches show the original work and then the effect of adding color to it.
I just got my new "field watercolor journal" using Fluid 140lb cold press watercolor paper. I love the weight and smooth texture of it. Most watercolor paper has too much texture for drawing, but I find this works quite well overall. I also love the square format, allowing me the freedom to choose how to construct the image. – wide, tall, square.
I am using my old travel watercolor paint set, which is great for on the go work.

My feeling at this point is that I have a lot of work to do to achieve an interesting balance. I tend to overwork the sketch, and then overwork the color. I prefer pieces that have a real energy, with bold dashes of color added. It is a learning process for me I guess.
